2020 Curatorial Theme - SOLSTICE
The Solstice phenomenon has been observed throughout time by ancient and modern civilizations around the world. The word Solstice is derived from Latin, with sol meaning "sun" and sistere meaning "to stand still" which describes the observation of the point that the sun pauses or stands still in the sky momentarily during this bi-annual occurrence. Solstice marks the moment in time that one of Earth’s poles is at its greatest distance from the equator, marking the beginning of astronomical winter in one hemisphere and summer in the other. This cosmic occurrence has been held with mystical belief and gratitude as cultures through the ages have marked the event with traditional ritual and celebrations. Solstice traditions recognize the close relationship of the sun, earth and of the human spirit. It is a time of reflection, renewal, giving thanks and hope.
